Dear Dr. Naik:<br />
Please accept my greetings. I am in due receipt of your letter dated July 11, 1975. After long years it is pleasing and surprising to receive an affectionate letter from you. I think I met you sometimes in the year 1958. Since then in 1965 I came to America and started this missionary activity from New York in 1966. Now the Society has got about 100 branches all over the world. And, everywhere we have got Deity worship; Guru Gouranga, Radha Krishna, and Jagadisha.<br />
Regarding your suggestion for improving the arotiks, it is already my order that arotik is held gorgeously with mridanga, kartals, and bell ringing. We hold six times aratik and three aratiks especially in the early morning mangal arotik, then ''[unclear]'' and bhoga arotik they do congregationally according to your suggestions. But when the devotees go out for preaching or sell books in different places of the city, only two or three men remain in the temple. At that time they use the tape recorder. They play on of my tapes on which I am singing. Otherwise in all of the arotiks they attend. That is my advise.<br />
Prasadam in this country means a full meal. From the very beginning even when I was alone, I was cooking myself for at least one dozen men, and I distributed full meals. According to Chaitanya Mahaprabhu philosophy, prasadam should be taken up to the neck, <u>akantha</u>. In Jagannatha Puri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's only occupation was holding Samkirtan at least four hours every day and distributing prasadam to the devotees. It is stated in the Chaitanya Charitamrta that the Lord was so liberal that He would give to every man prasadam quite sufficient for being eaten by two or three men. So we are trying to follow by distributing prasadam very liberally, and we invite everyone without any discrimination. Everywhere we have got temples we distribute prasadam especially to the poorer men. I am enclosing one issue of our "Back to Godhead" magazine which contains photos of our prasadam distribution starting on page 12. This prasadam distribution is going on all over the world.<br />
Regarding the free distribution of books, there is no need in this country. They have sufficient money and sometimes they pay more than the price. Here in this country if literature is given free of charge, they throw it away. In most cases we offer our books and ask for a contribution. And, sometimes they pay three rimes or four times the requested price. So about money matters they are very liberal. Krishna has given them money, and they spend it very liberally.<br />
You will be interested to know we are collecting about Dollars 250,000 per month. This means about Rs. 20 lakhs per month from book sales. I have written about 50 big books of 400 pages each and about a dozen small books, and all of them are being sold in the above mentioned figures. We spend also

very liberally, and whatever we collect we spend it also. The first book was started with your foreword, <u>Easy</u> <u>Journey</u> <u>to</u> <u>Other</u> <u>Planets</u>. Now they are selling revised editions and perhaps it is the best selling item. Since I have come to this country, I might have sold this <u>Easy</u> <u>Journey</u> about one half million copies. My <u>Krishna</u> books are selling more than that. So by Krishna's grace our books are being appreciated by universities, libraries, and respectable professors, and some are being used as textbooks in the universities. I am enclosing herewith a copy of our book catalogue which contains some of the comments of the professors. I hope you will enjoy it. Also I am enclosing a copy of one book, <u>Scientific</u> <u>Basis</u> <u>of</u> <u>Krishna</u> <u>Consciousness</u>, written by one of my Ph.D. students. You are also a scientist, and I hope you will enjoy it.<br />
In India we have got a program of membership and patronship costing Rs. 1,111/- and 2,222/- respectively, and all of our members and patrons are receiving all of the books free of charges. So any member can come to our temples and live as long as he likes and take free prasadam. So if any Indians students come here as our member, we shall welcome him and give him a place as well as prasadam free of charges.<br />
We have already organized the Ratha Yatra ceremony, and we hold a great Love Feast festival every Sunday in everyone of our branches. Now I advised to organize more festivals during Janmastami, and Ramachandra's Appearance Day, and Gaura Purnima, the Appearance of Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.<br />
I am addressing this letter to your Indian address because I could not properly reply your letter earlier because your letter has been redirected to me from the many places I have been on tour. I am also sending a copy of this letter to your address in USA in care of your son. I am very anxious to meet you again. I am returning to India by October, and I am inviting you to come to our Vrindaban temple and live there for some time. I have got a very nice Guest House there, and I would suggest humbly that since you are already retired from service and your sons are well situated, that you may retire from your family life and live in Vrindaban in the vanaprastha order. Our Vrindaban temple is appreciated as the best in this quarter. The Governor of Uttar Pradesh stayed with me for two days recently, so at least for a few days you may come there and live with me.<br />
Learned scholars like you are now needed to represent the cause of Krishna consciousness because without this consciousness the human society is doomed. So I require the help of respectable, learned scholars like you for spreading this movement more and more. According to the Vedic system this body is perishable and the ultimate form of this body is to become ash, stool, or earth. Therefore it is advised by the great pandita Chanakya that the body should be sacrificed for a better cause. That is the idea inherent everywhere, especially in India. Everyone is advised to achieve the result of pious activities by engaging this body for such purposes. That is the greatest gain. According to the Vedic varna ashrama it is compulsory that one retire from his family life and engage this body for Krishna's service at the end of his life. As it is stated in the Srimad-Bhagavatam: <u>tat</u> <u>sadhu</u> <u>manye</u> '<u>suravarya</u> <u>dehinam</u> sada samudvigna dhiyam asad grahat/ hitvartma patam grham andha-kupam/ vannad gato yad harim asrayet. Prabhupāda: This prayer (''stotra'') which you have sung it is ''Brahmā-saṁhitā''. Brahmā, Brahmājī. This prayer was composed by Brahmājī at the time of creation with the help of Bhagavān. It is Brahmā, ''Brahmā-saṁhitā''. Herein, he gives an introduction of God:

:''lakṣāvṛteṣu surabhīr abhipālayantam''

Bhagavān Govinda, Śrī Kṛṣṇa, his abode is ''cintāmaṇi''. It is a spiritual abode '', not the material abode. You might have heard, ''cintāmaṇi'', you may not have seen it, ''cintāmaṇi'' is a gem which when touches an iron, the iron becomes gold. It is called a touchstone. And it is said that the abode of God and the buildings there are not made of stones, they are made of ''cintāmaṇi''. This ''cintāmaṇi'' stone, ''cintāmaṇi'' stone is not a material thing. Therefore it is called ''cintāmaṇi''. There everything—name of the God, abode of the God, form of the God, glories of God and God’s paraphernalia—are ''cinmaya'', not material. Everything is ''cinmaya'', ''sac-cid-ānanda-vigrahaḥ'':

:''sac-cid-ānanda-vigrahaḥ''
:''anādir ādir govindaḥ''
:''sarva-kāraṇa-kāraṇam''

Just like God’s body is full of bliss, truth, knowledge and eternal, similarly everything pertaining to God — name of God and God are non-different. A name of God has the same potency as the potency of God. Caitanya Mahāprabhu says:

:''nāmnām akāri bahudhā nija-sarva-śaktis''
:''tatrārpitā niyamitaḥ smaraṇe na kālaḥ''
:''nāmnām akāri bahudhā nija-sarva-śaktis''
:''tatrārpitā niyamitaḥ smaraṇe na kālaḥ''
:''etādṛśī tava kṛpā bhagavan mamāpi''
:''durdaivam īdṛśam ihājani nānurāgaḥ''
:([[CC Antya 20.16|CC Antya 20.16]])

Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu is praying for us, "O God, You are all powerful, You have invested all Your potencies in those names". Just like God is all powerful, His holy name is also all powerful and God has many names. For instance, ''viṣṇu-sahasranāma''. God’s potency has been invested in all His holy names: ''nāmnām akāri bahudhā nija-sarva-śaktis''. And to chant His holy name there are no hard and fast rules ''niyamitaḥ'' nor there is consideration of time ''kālaḥ'' for remembering them. There is no consideration that God’s name has to be chanted in this time period. No!—''niyamitaḥ smaraṇe na kālaḥ''. For chanting God’s holy name there is no concept of ''kālaḥ'' (time). While in other processes of worshiping (''arcanā'') there involves consideration of time. For instance, ''maṅgala-ārati'' is to be performed in the morning, ''bhoga-ārati'' in the noon, ''sandhya-ārati'' in evening. A method of worshiping God (''arcanā-vidhi'') has to be followed according to time. However, there is no time factor involved in chanting the holy name of God. You can chant as per your convenience. While walking on a road, you have no difficulty in chanting:

:''Hare Rāma Hare Rāma Rāma Rāma Hare Hare''

There is no cost either, nor is there any loss. Just see these young Europeans, Americans - these devotees they are in front of you. All the time they are chanting. They are not ashamed, thinking "We are Europeans, why should we chant Kṛṣṇa, people may laugh". No. When there arose love of God in a person, he is free from this external knowledge that all these people will laugh on us, or will make fun of us. He is free from such thoughts. This is the symptom of love of God. A devotee immersed in love of God becomes mad. He is free from external things. So this is the power of God. Therefore Caitanya Mahāprabhu says: ''nāmnām akāri bahudhā nija-sarva-śaktis tatrārpitā''. All the energies of God have been invested in His holy name. So if you chant with purity, you are protected by all energies of God. You will not be afraid of ''māyā''. God Himself says in ''Bhagavad-gītā'':

:''mām eva ye prapadyante''
:''māyām etāṁ taranti te''

If you want to save yourselves from the hands of ''māyā'', chant all the time:

:''Hare Rāma Hare Rāma Rāma Rāma Hare Hare''

At last Caitanya Mahāprabhu says: ''etādṛśī tava kṛpā bhagavan mamāpi''. God is so merciful that for the people of this age of Kali, who are fallen, there is only one remedy prescribed:

:''harer nāma harer nāma harer nāmaiva kevalam''
:''kalau nāsty eva nāsty eva nāsty eva gatir anyathā''
:([[CC Adi 17.21|CC Ādi 17.21]])

So this is the mercy of God that through His holy name He is dancing all the times on our tongues. So: ''etādṛśī tava kṛpā''. Caitanya Mahāprabhu is lamenting on behalf of us that, "Oh my Lord, You are so merciful, but we are so unfortunate that we have no attraction for your holy name". Therefore a learned scholar says:

:''aho bata śva-paco 'to garīyān''
:''yaj-jihvāgre vartate nāma tubhyam''
:([[SB 3.33.7|SB 3.33.7]])

Such a person who utters the holy name of God is worshipable. ''Śva-paco'', even if born in the family of dog-eaters, such a person is ''garīyān'', worshipable. The meaning of ''garīyān'' is worship, worshipable. So this ''kṛṣṇa-bhakti-rasa-bhāvitā matiḥ saṅga'', International society for Kṛṣṇa Consciousness is preaching holy name all over the world. And we also want you to cooperate with it: ''prāṇair arthair dhiyā vācā.'' ([[SB 10.22.35|SB 10.22.35]])

For preaching the glories of God: ''etāvaj janma-sāphalyaṁ dehinām''. This is the only duty in human life ''prāṇair arthair dhiyā vācāśreya-ācaraṇaṁ sadā''— to serve God with one’s life, wealth, intelligence and words. So I request all of you. All these devotees, who have come from America by spending four lakhs rupees for tickets, have come here. Why? They want you too to cooperate with this ''saṅkīrtana-yajña'', and give up this our designated identity that "I am American, I am Indian, I am Japanese, I am Hindu, I am Muslim". By giving up this designated identity, everyone should think that, "I am servant of God": ''jīvera 'svarūpa' haya—nitya-kṛṣṇa-dāsa''' ([[CC Madhya 20.188|CC Madhya 20.108]]).

If we constantly think that we are servant of God, then we are the liberated persons. ''Mukti'' (liberation) is nothing but to attain one’s constitutional position (''svarūpa''). This ''svarūpa'' can be attained in ''saṅkīrtana''. Therefore Caitanya Mahāprabhu says: ''ceto-darpaṇa-mārjanaṁ bhava-mahā-dāvāgni-nirvāpaṇaṁ'' ([[CC Antya 20.12|CC Antya 20.12]]).

The quarrels and botherations that the world confronts—all these can be mitigated only through ''saṅkīrtana''. Kindly cooperate with it. Thank you very much. Hare Kṛṣṇa.
